Electronic Resume Tips

Electronic Resume is specifically designed for use in a computer. There are many things to put into consideration when writing a resume that will be posted, transmitted through the Internet, or one that will be scanned into a computer when it is received.

When designing a scan able resume its important that you type it in a format that will allow it be easily scanned into a computer readable form to be added into database easily. One of the reasons why recruiters would want to receive a resume that can be scanned is the mere fact that scanning allows a the employer to using a software use keywords to quickly review each applicant’s experience and skills, and to also keep your resume for future reference.

Electronic Resume Tips and Tricks

To get you started, following is a list of things to keep in mind when creating electronic resumes.

  • Use standard fonts in which none of the letters touch.
  • Avoid such things as underlining, italics, and fancy scripts that are unnecessary as most will in either way scan properly.
  • Use boldface and capitalization to set off elements. Again, make sure letters don’t touch. Leave at least a quarter inch between lines of type.
  • Keep information and elements at the left margin. Centering, columns, and even indenting may change when the resume is optically scanned.
  • Do not use any lines, boxes, or graphics.
  • Place the most important information at the top of the first page then properly number the pages if more than one at the top of the second page.
  • List each telephone number on its own line in the header.
  • Since the key words are of more use in a scanned resume, use multiple keywords or synonyms represented by nouns rather than verbs, for what you do to make sure your qualifications will be picked.
  • Be descriptive in your titles so that the job title and what exactly it is that you did can come out Cleary. E.g. instead of writing  “assistant”; say  ”legal office assistant”.
  • Make sure the contrast between print and paper is good. This can be done by using a high-quality laser printer and white or very light colored 8.5-by-11-inch paper.
  • Mail a high-quality laser print out or an excellent copy without folding or stapling, as this might interfere with scanning. You may, however, use paper clips.

If the resume is on the other hand to be E-mailed to reviewers, use the ASCII text since it allows people with very different software platforms to exchange and understand the information incase the recipient has a different word processing application than yours.

Avoid these things when crafting your electronic resume:

  • Don’t use Tabs but instead use the space bar.
  • Don’t use any special characters, such as mathematical symbols and others.
  • Word wrap; Break line using the hard returns (the return key).
  • Centering or other formatting; Align everything at the left margin.

Don’t use bold or italicized fonts as everything will be converted to plain text when you save the file as a “text only” document.
